“Othellos” building: Alleged fraud and tenant pressure

Date:

Complaints filed over “Othellos” building

A serious building dispute has emerged following complaints about alleged dangerous conditions and alleged improper practices against tenants at the “Othellos” building on 28th October Avenue in Nicosia.

The concerns were outlined in a letter submitted to the Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (EOA) and signed by the owner of a local business operating in the property.

Claims of unsafe structure and neglect

According to the complaint, the building has been declared unsafe, but the issues reportedly stem only from an abandoned section of the property, while other commercial units continue to operate normally.

The letter alleges that property owners may be allowing the building to deteriorate intentionally, intending to force tenants to vacate without compensation, escalating the building dispute.

It also refers to what are described as “malicious actions” aimed at removing businesses through allegedly unlawful means.

Dispute over closure and compensation plans

The property owners are reported to have submitted a request for the revocation of operating permits and eventual demolition of the building, on the condition that tenants are compensated.

However, the complainant argues that no concrete safeguards for compensation have been secured, raising further concerns among affected businesses.

The letter also criticises delays and omissions by competent authorities, claiming that complaints dating back to 2014 were not addressed in time to prevent the current situation.

The author of the letter calls for immediate intervention by the EOA to ensure the building’s safety is restored without disrupting the operation of businesses still active on site.

The complainant warns that if business operations are affected, legal action will be taken against all involved parties, including property owners and relevant authorities.
