Authorities issue deadline to residents
Evacuations have begun as authorities move to address safety risks in dangerous apartment buildings in Limassol.
According to local reports, the Limassol District Local Government Organisation has sent notices to property owners of one hazardous building, giving them until Monday to evacuate the premises.
Officials warned that failure to comply will result in the building being sealed.
Safety concerns in ageing buildings
The evacuations come amid ongoing concerns about structural safety, particularly in areas such as Germasogeia, where residents and business owners have reported repeated incidents.
A shop owner operating beneath one of the affected buildings described a worsening situation over the past decade, citing falling balconies and debris.
The business owner said parts of balconies and plaster have fallen in recent years, posing serious risks to residents and passers-by.
He added that he was personally injured when part of a balcony collapsed onto him four years ago.
Calls for urgent action
The situation has prompted calls for faster intervention by authorities to prevent further incidents.
Residents and business owners are urging coordinated action to address structural risks in older buildings and ensure public safety.
The evacuations in Limassol are part of broader efforts to assess and manage dangerous structures across the district, with further measures expected if additional risks are identified.
