The first phase of the Pedieos River restoration project has been officially completed, marking a significant step towards transforming the river corridor into a vibrant, accessible and environmentally sustainable public space for all communities in Nicosia.
Funded by the European Union under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the initiative aims to restore natural habitats, create shared public spaces and strengthen connections between communities across the capital.
New cycling and walking route completed
The completed 1.2-kilometre section connects the Ledra Palace crossing area with the Pedieos River/Kanli Dere corridor.
The new infrastructure includes a two-way cycle lane, pedestrian pathway and green zone, creating safer and more accessible routes while improving access to nature in the heart of the city.
The completion event brought together representatives from the European Union, UNDP, cyclists, community groups and residents from across Nicosia. Participants took part in walking and cycling activities along the newly completed route to celebrate the milestone.

Project expected to benefit 250,000 visitors
According to organisers, the project is expected to benefit at least 250,000 visitors annually and forms part of a broader effort to expand a 3.7-kilometre linear park across Nicosia.
The wider Pedieos River restoration initiative aims to enhance green spaces, rehabilitate the river environment and create accessible public areas for residents and visitors alike.
Officials said the project promotes sustainable living, environmental awareness and interaction between communities through upgraded cycling and walking infrastructure.
Second phase to begin in September
Following the completion of the first phase, work on the second phase is expected to begin in September 2026.
The next stage will further develop a continuous walking and cycling route, supporting sustainable mobility, recreation, environmental protection and greater connectivity throughout Nicosia.
The Pedieos River restoration project is regarded as a key component of ongoing efforts to improve public spaces and strengthen community ties in Cyprus’ divided capital.
