ON THIS DAY: Celebrating Nikola Tesla (1856) and Marcel Proust (1871)

Date:

Two towering figures in science and literature were born on this day: Nikola Tesla (1856) and Marcel Proust (1871). Their legacies continue to shape the modern world — one through electricity and innovation, the other through introspection and literary genius.

Nikola Tesla (10 July 1856 – 7 January 1943)

Visionary inventor and pioneer of modern electricity

Nikola Tesla was born on 10 July 1856 in Smiljan, then part of the Austrian Empire (modern-day Croatia), to Serbian parents. From a young age, Tesla displayed a photographic memory and an extraordinary ability to visualise complex mechanisms in his mind — a form of mental prototyping that would define his inventive process.

After studying engineering in Central Europe, Tesla emigrated to the United States in 1884 and briefly worked with Thomas Edison. The two would become rivals during the famed “War of Currents”, with Edison promoting direct current (DC) and Tesla advocating for alternating current (AC), which ultimately became the global standard for electricity distribution.

Key achievements:

  • Development of the alternating current (AC) power system
  • Invention of the Tesla Coil, used in early radio and wireless technologies
  • Creation of the induction motor and transformer technologies
  • Pioneering experiments in radio transmission, remote control, and wireless energy
  • Significant contributions to the first hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls

Tesla held more than 300 patents and imagined technologies decades ahead of his time, from radar to wireless communication and renewable energy concepts.

Legacy:
Tesla died in relative obscurity in 1943, but his legacy has grown to legendary status. Today, he is remembered as a brilliant, if underappreciated, genius. The SI unit for magnetic flux density, the tesla (T), is named in his honour. His name has been immortalised not only in science but in popular culture and commerce. Most notably by the electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, Inc., founded by Elon Musk and others in 2003. The company adopted Tesla’s name to symbolise its commitment to revolutionary electric technologies. Today, Tesla cars stand at the forefront of sustainable transport and innovation — a modern embodiment of the visionary ideals Nikola Tesla championed more than a century ago.

Marcel Proust (10 July 1871 – 18 November 1922)

Architect of modern fiction and the literature of memory

Marcel Proust was born in Auteuil, a suburb of Paris, in 1871. Though plagued by chronic illness throughout his life, Proust became one of the most influential literary figures of the 20th century. His singular voice and introspective style redefined the novel as a vehicle for psychological and philosophical exploration.

His masterpiece, À la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time), spans seven volumes and over a million words. It explores the nature of memory, art, time, and love, using deeply personal experiences and a richly detailed depiction of French society.

Key highlights:

  • Began his literary career with essays and translations, especially of English art critic John Ruskin
  • Published the first volume of In Search of Lost Time, Swann’s Way, in 1913 — initially at his own expense after repeated rejections
  • The novel is known for its reflective, non-linear narrative style and the use of involuntary memory, most famously exemplified by the madeleine episode
  • The series continued posthumously, with later volumes published by his literary executor

Legacy:
Proust is considered one of the most important literary figures in world literature. His exploration of time and consciousness anticipated the techniques of literary modernism and influenced generations of writers, including Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, and Samuel Beckett. The term “Proustian” has entered common use to describe vivid memory recall triggered by sensory experience.

A shared legacy

Tesla and Proust, though working in entirely different domains, both transformed how humanity understands its place in time — Tesla through the mastery of energy and invention, and Proust through the mapping of memory and emotional depth. On 10 July, we remember two individuals who altered the course of human thought, innovation, and imagination.
