Metropolitan Gerasimos responds to concerns
The Old Calendarist Church visit to a livestock unit in Troulloi prompted concern and a police inquiry following instructions from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Speaking on the “Protoselido” programme, Metropolitan Gerasimos of the Old Calendarist Orthodox Church (GOC) of Kition said misconceptions had been created regarding the visit.
“An incorrect impression has been formed about us, which is why the Holy Metropolis issued a press release clarifying our visit to the Ecclesiastical Unit,” he said.
He explained that the faithful had first gathered for prayer at the Church of Agios Spyridon in Aradippou, where a blessing service was conducted in accordance with church order.
Visit to livestock unit in Troulloi
Regarding the presence at the farm, the Metropolitan said that after the service, holy water was distributed to worshippers and a livestock farmer requested that clergy visit his unit in Troulloi.
“We went to one and only livestock unit, knowing and strictly observing all prescribed medical protocols,” he stated.
He stressed that before entering the unit, they underwent two checks- by the Police and through disinfection procedures.
“When we arrived at the unit, we were disinfected again by the staff there and we blessed the facilities. It is incorrect what was published that we conducted the blessing service there. That is wrong. We went, we were disinfected, we blessed the premises, and we left,” he said.
Police investigation and ministry position
The Old Calendarist Church visit led to an investigation by the Police after instructions from the Ministry of Agriculture.
According to Metropolitan Gerasimos, the Minister herself stated that since the competent authorities confirmed the measures were observed, there was no issue of violation.
“We were contacted by the Police yesterday. We provided the details we were required to give. Since then, we have not received any further official update,” he said.
Church pledges support to livestock farmers
Concluding, the Metropolitan emphasised the Church’s ongoing support for those facing hardship.
“The Church will always and consistently stand by the suffering person. We carry out this work and will stand by livestock farmers, calling everyone to modesty, seriousness, and support for those being tested,” he said.
