EAC workers strike today disrupts services

Date:

Members of the EAC unions have launched a two-hour warning strike today from 08:00 to 10:00, citing “events that systematically and dramatically short-circuit EAC”.

Customer service closures

As a result of the strike, EAC Customer Service Centres and offices will remain closed from 07:45 until 10:00.

The Independent Union of Technical and Operational Staff of EAC expressed its disagreement with the strike decision.

Union grievances

In a joint letter to the EAC General Director, the unions said citizens are witnessing “the inadequacy of electricity supply, the continuous rise in electricity costs, the disconnection of rooftop solar panels, and insufficient water for basic needs”.

They attributed these issues to “erratic government policies, lack of strategic planning, and the inertia of responsible authorities”, adding that the state continues to promote the idea that EAC will provide “cheap electricity”.

The unions warned that these circumstances “systematically and dramatically short-circuit EAC, leaving it powerless and a passive observer to rising electricity costs and the visible risk of complete shutdown”.

Labour issues impact operations

The unions also highlighted unresolved labour issues that hinder the smooth operation and effectiveness of the organisation.

They stressed that the strike demonstrates staff determination to protect EAC, safeguard the interests of the country and economy, and serve consumers.
