New political landscape takes shape ahead of 2028

Date:

The completion of the first plenary session of Cyprus’ new Parliament marked the end of an electoral contest that, for Annita Demetriou and the Democratic Rally (DISY), concluded in what many describe as an ideal outcome. The party’s first-place finish, its final electoral result and Demetriou’s re-election as Speaker of the House have created a new political reality. For many observers, Demetriou has emerged as the dominant figure within Cyprus’ centre-right camp and a likely focal point for DISY’s preparations ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

At the same time, the developments have begun to clarify the broader political landscape for the next presidential race. The parliamentary election results reinforced AKEL’s position as the principal force around which any future alliance of the wider left and centre-left is expected to be built.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party (DIKO) emerged from the process with mixed results. Efforts by party leader Nikolas Papadopoulos to secure support for the Speakership ultimately failed, as he was unable to gain the backing of either AKEL or the Immediate Democracy movement. In the final vote, his candidacy relied solely on DIKO’s parliamentary group before the party shifted its support to Annita Demetriou in the decisive round.

Demetriou’s strengthened position

Demetriou enters the next political phase from a position of considerable strength. Her dual success in both the parliamentary elections and the Speakership vote has effectively consolidated her authority within DISY and elevated her status as a potential presidential contender for 2028. Many within the centre-right now view her as the most credible challenger to President Nikos Christodoulides should she decide to seek the presidency.

Although Demetriou has not publicly declared any intentions regarding the 2028 race, political observers argue that pressure from within DISY could eventually push her toward a candidacy. Questions about alternative contenders remain unresolved, with names such as Averof Neofytou and former minister George Pamboridis occasionally mentioned in political discussions. Nevertheless, Demetriou remains at the centre of virtually every scenario being considered.

A growing rivalry with Christodoulides

While President Christodoulides publicly congratulated Demetriou following her re-election as Speaker, reports suggest that informal contacts and political calculations had taken place behind the scenes in the lead-up to the vote. According to the analysis, both the Presidential Palace and DISY now appear to be moving gradually toward a new political rivalry that is expected to culminate in the 2028 presidential election.

AKEL and ALMA move closer

One of the most significant outcomes of the process was the apparent consolidation of cooperation between AKEL and the political movement ALMA, led by former Auditor General Odysseas Michaelides. The report suggests that discussions between the two sides have strengthened political ties and may shape future opposition strategies ahead of the presidential contest.

New balances on the centre-right

The parliamentary arithmetic following the elections altered the balance of power between DISY and DIKO, while also highlighting the role of smaller political forces such as the Immediate Democracy movement and ELAM. The Speakership vote exposed new alliances, rivalries and strategic calculations that could influence future cooperation among centre-right parties.

The outcome has left Annita Demetriou politically strengthened, AKEL better positioned within the opposition camp and President Christodoulides facing the prospect of a more competitive political environment as attention increasingly shifts toward the presidential elections of 2028.
