Mother of Vangelis Fragkoulis insists on murder, not suicide

Date:

The mother of Vangelis Fragkoulis appeared on the “Protoselido” programme and reiterated that she will never accept her son committed suicide. She asserts that all evidence indicates murder and persistently demands that authorities send the case to criminal court.

She stated that investigators completed the case two and a half years ago, after the first inquest report called for re-examining possible third-party involvement. Despite interrogations and collection of genetic material, which she says belongs to more than two people, the mother alleges delays and indifference from authorities.

She highlights that authorities solve other cases promptly while her son’s case remains sidelined, and she questions whom they might protect. She expressed the opinion that “either a police officer or a military person is involved. They cover someone.”

Evidence suggesting homicide

She maintains that all findings point to murder: authorities found Vangelis dead in his car with three stab wounds, the knife in his heart, beating marks on his face and body, and completely clean hands with no traces of self-inflicted injury.

The mother also alleges that police failed to examine the scene properly. They collected neither genetic material nor fingerprints, and they did not seize the premises’ security camera immediately. When experts finally examined it months later, critical days had disappeared, which she claims shows someone with access tampered with the footage.

Demand for justice

After her persistent efforts, the case again faces a possible new inquest, but the mother clearly demands criminal court proceedings, as she believes further delays undermine justice. She stresses that sufficient evidence now identifies suspects.

She seeks answers from authorities and questions why no police official comments publicly. Her unwavering resolve to uncover all the evidence and honor her child’s memory, firmly maintaining that Vangelis was murdered and did not take his own life.

Mrs Vlachou initially said that the pathologist’s diagnosis via Viber constitutes a criminal act.

Mrs Tsitsi noted that the case of Vangelis Fragkoulis resembles that of Thanasis Nikolaou, but with different perpetrators and murder weapons. “The difference is Mrs Andriana has fought for 18 years; we will not allow Mrs Vlachou to fight even eight years.”

Mrs Vlachou later recounted that a police officer told her, “What can we do, Mrs Nektaria, you are the second Andriana,” to which she replied, “Will it take 16 years to vindicate my child?”

She gave a statement after five and a half months because police repeatedly turned her away. One officer tried desperately to make her withdraw, but she persisted. Her statement referenced many events, yet authorities took no action. They took no statements from neighbours in the crime area and conducted no investigation.

She awaits immediate progress towards solving the case and calls it criminal that authorities violate human rights in the fight for justice and accountability.

Events leading to death

That morning her Vangelis Fragkoulis celebrated obtaining his freediving licence and attended a meeting at his ex-girlfriend’s house, where an argument occurred with people present. A second argument followed in the garage, the crime scene, and immediately afterwards her Vangelis lay dead. “Thus, some people saw him and participated in both the argument and the murder.”

In closing, Mrs Vlachou said, “My Vangelis had no intention of suicide; on the contrary, others intended to murder him and they did. I know a great deal and await answers; I await the solving of my child’s murder. The motive is certainly financial, and certainly involves jealousy, hatred and revenge.”

Authorities found the Greek merchant navy officer dead on Saturday 3 October 2020 inside the storage unit he rented at 10A Ifaistou Street in Limassol.
