Court rejects bail application
A Limassol court has ordered the remand in custody of a 41-year-old woman until mid-May after rejecting a bail application in a case involving the attempted murder of her seven-year-old son.
The court ruled that the defendant must remain in custody ahead of her trial before the Permanent Criminal Court of Limassol.
Serious charges filed
The woman faces a single charge of attempted murder, allegedly committed on 10 February 2026, by administering sedative pills to her child.
The offence carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, the court noted in its decision regarding the attempted murder case. Her lawyers had applied for bail under conditions to ensure her appearance at trial, but the request was dismissed.
The prosecution opposed bail, arguing that the defendant has no ties to Cyprus and therefore poses a significant flight risk.
After hearing both sides, the judge reserved judgment before ultimately rejecting the application and ordering continued detention until the Criminal Court hearing in mid-May.
Witnesses and trial proceedings
Witnesses in the case are expected to include the woman’s husband, treating doctors, and the seven-year-old child.
The case was formally committed to the Permanent Criminal Court of Limassol last Friday.
The defendant had previously been hospitalised at Athalassa Hospital following the incident and was later discharged after doctors confirmed she was fit to stand trial.
Background to the case
According to testimony, the child’s father returned home on the evening of 10 February and found both his wife and son unconscious in the child’s bedroom.
He initially believed the boy was asleep, but later discovered his wife was unwell and took her to a private hospital.
Upon returning home, he found his son in the same condition and later discovered three empty blister packs of sedative pills in a household bin.
Child’s statement
In a video-recorded statement, the child said he was taken to the hospital after nearly dying from expired pills given to him by his mother, who believed they would help him.
He stated he was not ill and did not want to take the medication, but swallowed the pills with water after being given them.
The boy also recalled that his mother told him she had taken pills herself due to a headache.
