Defence manufacturing is set to expand in Cyprus after Greek company METLEN, through its subsidiary M Technologies, and Cyprus-based HOUTRIS signed an exclusive strategic cooperation agreement.
The agreement provides for the establishment of a joint venture in Cyprus, which will produce military vehicles under the European Union’s SAFE programme, with the aim of strengthening the island’s defence industrial base.
Focus on military vehicles and defence systems
According to the companies, the partnership will combine the international expertise and industrial capabilities of M Technologies, METLEN’s defence arm, with HOUTRIS’ engineering and manufacturing experience in the Cypriot market.
The collaboration aims to rapidly develop large-scale production capabilities for integrated defence systems.
Beyond military vehicle production, the two companies will also explore opportunities in the manufacturing, integration, support and maintenance of defence systems in Cyprus and the wider region.
Strengthening European defence industry
M Technologies Chief Executive Director Vasilis Tsiamis said strong industrial capabilities in Europe are essential for security, competitiveness and strategic autonomy.
He described the agreement as a significant step towards a new model of industrial cooperation between Greece and Cyprus, adding that the partnership aims to strengthen the defence industrial capabilities of the Republic of Cyprus through technology transfer and the use of existing local industrial expertise.
M Technologies is involved in the production and support of advanced defence systems, including Patriot air defence systems, Leopard tanks and components for FDI HN frigates, while maintaining partnerships with international defence companies.
Cyprus aims to expand industrial capabilities
HOUTRIS CEO Giannis Houtris said Cyprus now has the expertise, experience and industrial capacity to play a meaningful role in the European defence industry.
He said the initiative would strengthen Cyprus’ defence industrial base while creating opportunities for sustainable growth, technological development and positioning the country as a reliable industrial partner within Europe’s defence sector.
HOUTRIS operates in the fields of defence, specialised vehicles and integrated industrial solutions, having completed projects for the Ministry of Defence, the National Guard, the Fire Service and other public organisations in Cyprus and abroad.
