Man jailed for three years after smuggling cannabis

Date:

Nearly three-year prison sentence

A 28-year-old Greek Cypriot man has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison after being caught in possession of 23kg of cannabis.

The defendant was convicted of possessing drugs with intent to supply and was sentenced on 17 June.

Joint police operation

The man was arrested in December during a joint afternoon operation by the Sovereign Base Areas Police and the Cyprus Police Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN).

He was found inside his vehicle in Trachoni, where officers discovered the 23kg of cannabis.

Following sentencing, he was transferred to the Sovereign Base Areas Central Prison in Dhekelia, where he will serve his sentence.

‘Strong message’ to drug traffickers

Following the court proceedings, Inspector Melina Papagregoriou said she hoped the conviction would send a clear warning to those involved in drug-related crime.

“Drug trafficking causes serious harm to our communities, and this sentence reinforces our commitment to tackling this type of criminal activity effectively.

“I hope this decision sends a clear message that such criminal actions will not be tolerated.

“We will continue to pursue those involved in these activities with determination and without compromise, ensuring those responsible are held accountable for their actions.”
