Eight countries issue joint statement

Al Aqsa tensions have intensified after the foreign ministers of Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates issued a joint statement condemning Israeli actions at the Al Aqsa Mosque compound.

The ministers expressed concern over what they described as repeated violations of the historical and legal status quo of holy sites in Jerusalem.

Allegations of incursions and flag raising

In the statement, the countries cited “settler incursions” into the Haram al-Sharif compound and the raising of the Israeli flag as actions that escalate tensions and violate international norms.

They said such developments represent a breach of international law and rejected any attempt to alter the status of Jerusalem.

The statement also reaffirmed the role of Jordan in managing Jerusalem’s Islamic holy sites, underscoring its custodial responsibilities under existing agreements.

The countries stressed that preserving the legal and historical status quo is essential to preventing further escalation of Al Aqsa tensions in the region.

Support for two-state solution

The ministers reiterated their support for a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders, with an independent Palestinian state and East Jerusalem as its capital.

They also condemned ongoing settlement activity in the occupied West Bank and violence against Palestinians, calling for an end to actions that could further inflame tensions.
