Israeli land purchases in occupied Cyprus raise concern

Date:

Turkish journalist Emre Diner has raised serious concerns over Israeli land purchases in north Cyprus, describing the situation as “absurd” and warning that it threatens the already fragile political balance in the occupied areas.

In a recent post, Diner claimed that certain areas of land in the Turkish-occupied north—technically under the control of the self-declared ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’—are now being presented as districts of Israel, a characterisation he called highly alarming.

He cited figures suggesting that since 2023, around 31,000 dunams (roughly 31 million square metres) of land in the occupied north have been purchased by Jewish individuals, a number considered substantial by local observers.

Despite the scale of these acquisitions, Diner stressed that the issue has received little public or political attention. He highlighted the increasing presence of Israeli buyers in the region and warned that this trend could have geopolitical consequences.
