Israel prepares for potential conflict with Turkey

Date:

The latest report by Israel’s Nagel Committee on defence budgeting and security strategy highlights the need to prepare for a possible direct conflict with Turkey.

The committee, established by the government, warns that Turkey’s ambitions to restore Ottoman influence could heighten tensions with Israel, potentially leading to conflict. The report emphasises the risk of Syrian factions aligning with Turkey, creating a new and dangerous security threat for Israel.

It cautions that Turkish forces, supported by Syria, may act as proxies, exacerbating regional instability. This analysis comes amidst increasingly aggressive policies by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, perceived as hostile to Israel’s interests.

The committee presented its recommendations to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, proposing an increase in the defence budget of up to 15 billion NIS annually over the next five years to adequately prepare the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for emerging challenges.

Key measures recommended by the committee include:

  • Acquisition of advanced weapons: Additional F-15 fighter jets, refuelling aircraft, drones, and satellites to enhance long-range attack capabilities.
  • Strengthening air defence systems: Development of systems such as Iron Dome, David’s Sling, Arrow systems, and the new laser-based Iron Beam.
  • Border security: Construction of a reinforced security fence in the Jordan Valley, despite potential diplomatic repercussions with Jordan.

Prime Minister Netanyahu commented that the report provides a roadmap for safeguarding Israel’s future, stressing that the changing dynamics in the Middle East demand constant adaptation and preparation.
