Iran: Israel should be expelled from the UN after latest strike in Syria

Date:

Iran’s diplomatic corps called yesterday, Sunday, for an arms embargo on Israel and its exclusion from the United Nations following an airstrike in Syria that reportedly killed nine people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The NGO reported that at least nine people, including a senior member of Lebanon’s Hezbollah, were killed in an Israeli airstrike south of Damascus, in an apartment linked to members of the Shiite movement, an ally of Iran.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei “strongly condemned the brutal attack carried out…by the Zionist regime” in Damascus.

He also urged action against Israel, specifically calling for an “arms embargo” and “exclusion from the UN.”

Since the Syrian conflict erupted in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes in the neighbouring country, targeting the Syrian military and Iran-backed groups, notably Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which has deployed forces to support Syrian government forces.

These airstrikes have intensified since Israel entered into open conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon on 23 September.

Israel, which rarely comments publicly on these airstrikes, has recently focused on border crossings between Syria and Lebanon, accusing Hezbollah of using them to resupply with weapons and ammunition from Syria.

A sworn enemy of Iran, Israel is currently engaged in conflicts on two fronts—against the Palestinian Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon—both movements allied with Tehran, which has publicly advocated for a ceasefire agreement.
