Cause of death still unknown
The official post-mortem on the two children found dead in a car in Xylofagou has yet to establish the exact cause of death, with specialist forensic examinations now under way.
According to the British Bases, forensic examinations were inconclusive, meaning further specialist tests will now be carried out before a final report is issued.
Authorities say they will not draw any conclusions until the investigation has been completed.
Father and partner remain in custody
The children’s father and his partner remain in custody and are due to appear before court again on Thursday in connection with a case involving child neglect.
Investigators from the British Bases continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Current evidence suggests the two children entered the vehicle and remained inside for more than three hours.
How did the children become trapped?
Investigators are focusing on two key questions: how the children were unable to get out after entering the vehicle, and why they had been left alone at home.
Police are examining whether a fault in the vehicle’s locking mechanism may have prevented the children from opening the doors.
The car is expected to undergo a specialist technical inspection by experts from the manufacturer’s dealership in the coming days.
CCTV footage under examination
Investigators are also analysing CCTV footage showing the two siblings playing in the yard before walking towards the vehicle.
However, the footage is of poor quality and will undergo image enhancement in an effort to establish more clearly what happened.
Police are continuing to interview neighbours and members of the family’s circle.
So far, investigators have taken 25 witness statements, while both the children’s father and his partner have already been questioned in the presence of their lawyers.
