Increased dolphin activity in Cyprus prompts call for responsible navigation

Authorities issue guidance for boat operators

The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research has issued recommendations on vessel navigation near dolphins and other cetaceans following sightings in Cyprus waters.

In a statement, the department said the presence of the animals is “a particularly positive and encouraging phenomenon” for the island’s marine environment.

Authorities reminded the public that cetaceans are protected species and stressed that human activity at sea must avoid disturbing or injuring them.

Boat operators urged to keep distance

The department advised operators of recreational, fishing and other vessels to immediately reduce speed and maintain a slow, steady course when near the animals.

Boat operators are also urged to avoid sudden changes in speed or direction, not to chase or surround the animals, and not to cross their path.

Authorities further recommended maintaining a safe distance, avoiding prolonged presence near the animals, and limiting loud noises, music or other activities that could cause stress.

Disturbing protected species prohibited

The Department of Fisheries stressed that harassing or feeding protected species is prohibited under both national and European legislation.

Any action affecting the animals’ natural behaviour, including movement, reproduction or resting, is also banned.

Information about cetacean species found in Cyprus waters is available through the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research.
