How much time do Cypriots spend commuting?

Date:

Commuting in Cyprus takes almost an hour out of people’s day, with private cars remaining by far the preferred mode of transport for journeys to work and school, according to the latest figures from Numbeo.

The survey, based on data submitted by 111 users in Cyprus and updated on 4 June 2026, found that the average one-way commute lasts 25.09 minutes. This translates into roughly 50 minutes a day for a typical return journey.

Private cars remain the preferred choice

Private cars account for 66.67% of journeys to work or school, making them the dominant mode of transport in Cyprus.

Only 5.41% of commuters use buses, while the same proportion work from home. Walking accounts for 18.92% of journeys, cycling for 2.70% and motorcycles for 0.90%.

The survey recorded no tram or rail use, reflecting the absence of those transport networks in Cyprus.

Bus journeys take more than twice as long

The average commuting distance is 12.49 kilometres.

For car users, the average trip covers 15.66 kilometres and takes 22.97 minutes.

Bus users, however, spend an average of 50.67 minutes on a one-way journey. This includes around 13.33 minutes waiting at the bus stop, 33.83 minutes travelling by bus and another 3.5 minutes walking to or from the stop.

The findings highlight the significant difference in travel times between public and private transport.

Traffic and environmental impact

According to Numbeo’s Traffic Index, Cyprus scored 108.96, while its Inefficiency Index, which measures time lost because of congestion and other factors, reached 154.19.

The study also estimated the environmental impact of daily commuting, calculating that each commuter in Cyprus is responsible for around 1,060 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions each year from travelling to and from work or school.

Based on the same methodology, approximately 49 trees would be needed to offset the oxygen equivalent associated with those annual emissions.
