A protest will take place on Saturday, 8 August, against the planned installation of antennas by the British Bases in the Akrotiri area.
The demonstration has been organised by Kourion municipality and is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am from the first entrance to the Akrotiri municipal district.
Greens back demonstration
In a statement, the Cyprus Greens – Citizens’ Cooperation Movement said it supports the protest and called on the government to “strongly and decisively” back the municipality’s demand for the cancellation of the British government’s plans.
The party said the proposed installation involves a large number of surveillance antennas in the Merra area of Akrotiri, adjacent to the Akrotiri Salt Lake wetland.
Concerns over environment and public health
According to the Greens, the Akrotiri Salt Lake is one of Cyprus’ most important wetlands and already faces pressure from residential development in Zakaki, interventions near Lady’s Mile beach and military activities within the British Bases.
The party argued that the planned antenna installations could threaten both the Akrotiri habitat and the health of residents living in the area.
The statement also called on the European Union to support the Republic of Cyprus and efforts to protect the Akrotiri wetland and the health of residents in Kourion municipality.
Public invited to attend
The Greens urged their members, supporters and the wider public to participate in the demonstration organised by Kourion municipality on Saturday at 9:30am.
