House Speaker election under new system set for June 4

Date:

The new House of Representatives will hold its first plenary session on 4 June following the recent parliamentary elections held on 24 May 2026.

According to Deputy Director General of Parliament Andreas Christodoulou, the session will begin with the formal swearing-in of Members of Parliament, allowing them to officially assume their duties.

New rules for election of House President

The session will then proceed to the election of the Speaker of the House under a revised procedure.

In the first round, a candidate must secure 29 votes out of 56 MPs to be elected, representing a simple majority. If no candidate reaches the threshold, the top two contenders will advance to a second round, where the candidate with the most votes will be elected.

In the event of a tie, a repeat vote will be held, and if the deadlock persists, a public draw will determine the winner.

The sitting will be chaired by the oldest Member of Parliament, unless that MP is a candidate, in which case the next oldest will preside.

Committee structure to follow after plenary

Following the first plenary session, Parliament will convene again to establish the Committee of Selection, which will determine the composition of parliamentary committees and discuss chairmanships.

The rules allow political groups with at least seven MPs to claim committee chair positions. Based on current numbers, this applies to four political groups, though final allocation will be decided through negotiations within the committee.

The seat distribution in the new Parliament is as follows: DISY 17 seats, AKEL 15, ELAM 8, DIKO 8, ALMA 4, and Direct Democracy 4.

Focus on legislative work ahead

After committee formation, parliamentary delegations to European, regional and international organisations will also be established.

However, priority will be given to the formation of committees in order to allow the new Parliament to begin its legislative work.

Officials said the updated procedure modernises the election framework for the House Presidency and reflects decisions taken during the previous parliamentary term.
