Greece unable to assist Limassol wildfire efforts, says minister

Date:

Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis addressed public questions on Thursday regarding the lack of Greek assistance in tackling the ongoing Limassol wildfire, despite an official request from the Republic of Cyprus.

Speaking to CyBC’s “Proino Dromologio”, Hartsiotis explained that there had been direct communication with Greek authorities, who confirmed they are facing multiple active fire fronts within their own territory and cannot dispatch resources abroad at this time.

The minister stressed that the fire situation in Cyprus remains critical, with continuous flare-ups at the edges of previously burnt areas.

He noted that 14 firefighting aircraft were operating in Limassol on Thursday morning, with the aim of conducting as many water drops as possible before 11:00am, when strong winds are forecast to develop, potentially worsening conditions.

In addition to local and existing aerial support, two aircraft from Jordan are expected to arrive during the day, with two more from Spain en route if further assistance is required.

Meanwhile, Hartsiotis made no comment on the offer of assistance from Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, who stated on Wednesday that his side was willing to help with the firefighting effort. According to Turkish Cypriot media outlet Kıbrıs Postası, “the call for humanitarian solidarity still stands.” No official response from the Republic of Cyprus has been issued so far.

The Limassol wildfire has already led to the evacuation of 14 villages, the displacement of over 100 residents, and the confirmed deaths of two individuals. Emergency teams continue efforts to contain flare-ups and assess ongoing risks.
