Government won’t bow to blackmail, Mitsotakis tells farmers

Date:

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis declared the government will not succumb to blackmail from ongoing farmers’ mobilisations blocking key roads and tolls during Christmas travel. He urged avoiding citizen inconvenience or accidents, prioritising traffic police oversight and public responsibility.

Mitsotakis accused farmers of rejecting dialogue despite fair demands the government seeks to address. Of 27 requests, 20 resolved or discussable; next week completes €3.8bn payments despite delays.

Reform and dialogue plans

He announced a cross-party parliamentary committee for primary sector challenges. On transferring OPEKEPE duties to AADE – including compensations, opposed by farmers – Mitsotakis defended it as essential for swift, fair, transparent subsidies. Only his party supported the reform in parliament.

The PM stressed non-partisanship toward any social group.
