The Goethe-Institut Cyprus is organising its third edition of GoetheKino titled “Questions of her Own”, with the support of the Visual Artists and Art Theorists Association – phytorio. This film series, starting in March, Women’s History Month, and running until May, opens space for questions and reflection on the representation and visibility of women in the arts, inviting us to rethink art history.
Do we know the names of women artists? How credible is our art history? Through the film selection and the following discussions, we would like to give another opportunity for exchange and shared reflection together with visual artists and art theorists from Cyprus.
The series starts on 18 March 2026 with Susanne Radelhof’s Lost Women Art. This two-part documentary traces the stories of women artists written out of art history, with a focus on the last 100 years. Part 1 is titled From Impressionism to Abstraction and Part 2 is titled From New Vision to the Feminist Avant-Garde. Christina Lambrou, art historian and curator, and Ioulita Toumazi, writer, curator and art theorist, will help create a meaningful link to the Cypriot context and introduce us to Cypriot women artists.
We continue with Lotte am Bauhaus by Gregor Schnitzler, where we follow Lotte, a student at the Bauhaus, inspired by Alma Siedhoff-Buscher, on 29 April 2026. Here we will be joined by Evagoras Vanezis, art theorist, writer and curator, and Kyriaki Costa, interdisciplinary artist, for a discussion following the screening.
Questions of her Own concludes on 27 May 2026 with Shelly Silver’s Girls / Museum documentary, where she turns the museum into a site of inquiry, letting girls aged 7 to 19 to question what and who gets to be seen. Evagoras Vanezis, art theorist, writer and curator, and Melita Couta, interdisciplinary artist will give their own interpretations and reflect on the reflections shared by the group of girls.
This edition of GoetheKino is part of the parallel programme of the KunstRaumGoethe exhibition, titled Between Imagination and Hope, curated by Dr. Katharina Koch, with participating artists Mariandrie, Nurtane Karagil and Sophie Utikal. The exhibition is taking place from 17 April to 5 June 2026 at the Goethe-Institut Cyprus. More details will be announced.
