GESY adds barcode feature for easier prescription processing

Date:

New system for prescription execution

GESY barcode prescriptions come into effect from March 27, introducing a new way for beneficiaries to obtain their prescribed medication through the Beneficiary Portal, the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) announced.

Under the new system, patients can collect medicines, medical devices, or healthcare products from any pharmacy by presenting a barcode linked to their prescription.

How the barcode system works

Beneficiaries can access their barcode by logging into the GESY website and entering the “Beneficiary Portal”.

Within the portal, users select “Available Referrals” and then the “Prescriptions” category, where the barcode for each prescription is displayed.

At the pharmacy, the barcode can be scanned by the pharmacist, allowing the prescription to be executed without the need to provide personal details.

Focus on data protection

The introduction of GESY barcode prescriptions aims to enhance the protection of personal data, as patients no longer need to disclose sensitive information during the process.

The system builds on the existing option of printed prescriptions that already include a barcode.

Alternative option remains available

Beneficiaries who prefer traditional methods can still request a printed prescription from their treating doctor.

Access to the new service requires users to have an active account on the Beneficiary Portal and to have linked their beneficiary record.
