Activists from the flotilla bound to Gaza, who were detained by Israel, have been released from prison and are expected to be deported to Turkey on Thursday, according to officials.
The flotilla participants were held after being arrested at a southern Israeli port, following the interception of a protest convoy in international waters by the Israeli navy.
International criticism over treatment of activists
Reports on the handling of the activists sparked widespread international criticism, including remarks directed at Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also reportedly faced pressure over the incident, as videos shared online showed officials confronting demonstrators at the port.
The footage, which also featured Transport Minister Miri Regev, was widely circulated on social media and described as politically charged.
Mass deportation and detention details
The Israeli rights group Adalah said around 430 activists were released from a detention facility in southern Israel and will be deported via Ramon Airport near Eilat.
Officials confirmed that special flights are being arranged to transport detainees, including Turkish citizens and other foreign nationals, back to Turkey.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Ankara is coordinating special flights to repatriate its citizens as well as third-country nationals. He said Turkey would continue to defend the rights of its citizens and uphold its humanitarian responsibilities regarding civilians in Gaza.
Flotilla originated from Turkey
The flotilla departed from southern Turkey earlier this week before being intercepted by Israeli forces on Wednesday.
Similar missions in the past, including one involving activist Greta Thunberg, have also been intercepted, with participants later deported.
Organisers say the flotilla aimed to challenge the blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid, which they claim remains insufficient despite the ceasefire in place since October 2025.
