Fuel prices in Cyprus increased by 20.5% in May 2026 compared with May 2025, according to figures published by Eurostat on Monday.
The increase in Cyprus was close to the European Union average of 20.7%. Eurostat data showed that fuel and lubricants for personal transport recorded annual increases across all EU member states.
The sharpest increases were recorded in Bulgaria at 33.9%, Luxembourg at 32.2%, Lithuania at 30.8% and Romania at 30.4%.
Hungary registered the smallest increase at 3.5%, while the remaining member states saw increases ranging from 12.7% in Poland to 29.2% in France.
Diesel and petrol trends across Europe
Eurostat noted that fuel and lubricant prices across the EU generally followed a downward trend until February 2026 before beginning to rise in subsequent months.
Across the European Union, diesel prices increased by 29% in May 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier, while petrol prices rose by 16.2%.
On a monthly basis, however, EU consumers saw diesel prices fall by 5.8% compared with April 2026, while petrol prices increased by 0.8%.
Mixed picture for Cyprus consumers
In Cyprus, diesel prices dropped by 1.5% between April and May 2026.
The decline was smaller than the EU average and significantly lower than the largest reductions recorded in Germany (-11.9%), Greece (-8.5%), Estonia (-8.4%) and Ireland (-8.1%).
Meanwhile, petrol prices in Cyprus increased by 2.1% in May compared with April.
The increase followed the broader EU trend, with 23 member states recording monthly rises in petrol prices.
Italy recorded the highest monthly increase in petrol prices at 6.9%, while Germany (-5.6%), Ireland (-2.0%) and Sweden (-0.7%) reported declines.
