16-year-old e-scooter rider critical after hit by drunk driver

A crash in the early hours of Friday left a 16-year-old boy critically injured after a collision involving a scooter in Aglantzia, Nicosia.

According to police, the collision occurred at around 2 am as a vehicle was travelling from Griva Digeni Avenue towards Larnakos Avenue. Under circumstances that remain under investigation, the vehicle struck a personal mobility device being ridden by the 16-year-old.

Teen undergoes emergency surgery

The teenager suffered serious injuries and was taken to Nicosia General Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He remains in a critical condition.

Driver arrested on suspicion of drink driving

Police located the suspected vehicle a short time later at a different location.

A 27-year-old man, who is believed to have been driving the vehicle, underwent a breathalyser test and recorded 73μg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, well above the legal limit of 22μg.

He was arrested for a flagrant offence in connection with the case.

Investigation continues

The crash remains under investigation by the Nicosia Traffic Department, which is continuing its inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
