Former National Guard pillbox turned into a pigsty

Date:

A former National Guard pillbox near Denia has been turned into a pigsty, after a local resident discovered a pig inside the abandoned defence structure.

The unusual scene was filmed by Giorgos Georgiou, who told Sigma’s “Mesimeri kai Kati” programme that the sight was “both funny and sad”.

Concerns over abandoned defence sites

Georgiou said the issue was not limited to the specific pillbox, claiming that other bunkers and defensive structures have been used as dumping grounds or for other purposes.

He called for more frequent and systematic inspections by the relevant authorities.

After discovering the pig, Georgiou contacted military personnel he knows about the incident.

Defence Ministry says site is no longer operational

The Defence Ministry said the structure is an old defensive installation that has been withdrawn from active use and no longer has operational value.

Ministry spokesperson Sofianos Filippidis said the site is outside the National Guard’s operational plans and that procedures are under way for its demolition and eventual return to the landowners.

According to Sigma information, the pig was reportedly placed at the site by employees of the landowner.

Meanwhile, a National Guard team visited the pillboxes in the area on Monday morning to assess the situation.
