Foot-and-mouth: Truck carried dead animals then hay bales

Date:

Concerns over foot-and-mouth protocols in Cyprus have emerged following a complaint regarding the transport of hay bales using a vehicle that had allegedly previously been used to carry dead animals.

According to reports cited by Sigma correspondent Elena Louka, the same vehicle was later used to collect and transport hay bales, raising questions over the application of biosecurity measures.

Allegations over vehicle use

Information suggests that the hay was subsequently transported and used for feeding animals, including donkeys owned by the individual involved.

The foot-and-mouth issue has sparked concerns over whether proper hygiene and containment procedures were followed to prevent potential disease transmission.

Images and reports linked to the incident have prompted scrutiny of existing animal health protocols.

Concerns over disease control measures

The incident comes amid ongoing efforts by veterinary authorities and the government to manage and contain the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.

Officials have previously stressed the importance of strict compliance with biosecurity rules, placing emphasis on livestock owners’ responsibility in preventing outbreaks.

The foot-and-mouth situation in Cyprus has therefore renewed discussion about enforcement and monitoring of animal transport and handling practices.

Calls for clarity on protocols

Questions are now being raised about whether current procedures are sufficient to ensure safe handling of animal products and transport vehicles.

While no official findings have been announced regarding the specific incident, the case highlights wider concerns about adherence to established veterinary guidelines.

Authorities are expected to review compliance measures as part of ongoing disease control efforts.
