Foot-and-mouth disease spreads to Nicosia, 41 infected units

New outbreaks in Nicosia

The foot-and-mouth disease situation in Cyprus has escalated, with cases now detected in Nicosia’s Dali and Geri areas, creating two new infected zones of 3 and 10 kilometres. According to the Senior Officer of Veterinary Services, Sotiria Georgiadou, three new units were identified: one in Dali, one in Geri, and one in Oroklini, Larnaca.

Current containment measures

So far, all animals in 16 infected units have been culled. Assessments continue in the remaining units to proceed with further culls without delays. Vaccination coverage nationwide has reached 76% or higher for cattle and 42% or higher for sheep and goats. The hand-held vaccine has been ordered and is expected by late March or early April.

EU guidance

The update follows a recent visit by EU Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, Oliver Varhelyi, who stressed that full implementation of EU measures across the country is crucial. Strict adherence to regulations is the only way to quickly resolve the outbreak, minimising animal losses and limiting severe economic impacts on farmers.
