Foot-and-mouth disease: €45,000 fines for farmers’ violations

Date:

Fines issued for breaches of regulations

The response to the foot-and-mouth disease is being strictly enforced, with Veterinary Services carrying out extensive and targeted inspections across animal farms, transport points and related activities, authorities announced.

The measures are implemented under Decree Κ.Δ.Π. 130/2026, aimed at controlling the spread of the virus and protecting livestock production.

Administrative penalties imposed

According to the announcement, eight administrative fines have been issued so far, totalling €45,000, for violations mainly related to illegal animal movements.

In addition, six serious cases have been forwarded to the police for further investigation as part of the ongoing enforcement process.

The foot-and-mouth disease control strategy in Cyprus includes continuous monitoring and strict application of biosecurity rules across the sector.

Human activity linked to transmission

Veterinary Services noted that epidemiological data indicate human activity plays a key role in disease transmission, particularly through the movement of animals, contaminated materials, equipment and vehicles.

Officials stressed that compliance with biosecurity measures remains essential to limit the spread of the virus and protect the animal population.

Ongoing inspections and compliance call

Authorities confirmed that inspections will continue at an intensified pace. All stakeholders in the livestock sector are urged to strictly follow the provisions of the decree and official guidelines.

The foot-and-mouth disease framework aims to ensure early containment and prevent further outbreaks through consistent enforcement and preventive controls.
