Around 20,000 in Iran left without water after US strikes

Date:

Around 20,000 people have been left without access to drinking water in the port city of Sirik in southern Iran, following reported US strikes on two water reservoirs, according to Iranian state television.

The developments mark a significant escalation in the ongoing Iran water crisis, with local authorities warning of severe humanitarian consequences amid extreme heat conditions.

Water infrastructure damaged in southern Iran

The Iran water crisis has intensified after strikes reportedly targeted facilities in Jask, Sirik, and the island of Qeshm along Iran’s southern coastline near the Strait of Hormuz.

A local water company official told Iranian media that the damage has left residents dependent on limited groundwater resources, which are insufficient to replace the affected reservoirs.

Temperatures in the region are currently reported to range between 45°C and 50°C, further worsening living conditions for affected communities.

Regional escalation and military exchanges

Iran condemned the strikes as being carried out under a “false pretext” and said it responded with missile attacks targeting Jordan and Bahrain, both US allies in the region.

The escalation comes amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, where military exchanges have expanded across several countries.

Interceptions over Jordan

The Jordanian armed forces said they intercepted five missiles launched from Iran towards the Azraq area, where Iranian forces had claimed to target a US military base and command centre.

Jordan confirmed there were no casualties or damage and reiterated that it would not allow any violation of its airspace.

Earlier reports from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed strikes on US military facilities in Jordan, while Jordan said it had previously intercepted hundreds of missiles and drones since the conflict escalated.

Ongoing regional instability

The situation remains highly volatile, with repeated exchanges of fire and counterclaims from multiple sides.

Diplomatic efforts have continued in parallel, with US President Donald Trump stating that discussions were close to a “very good agreement” aimed at ending the wider conflict in the Middle East.

However, the latest developments underscore the fragility of the security situation and the growing humanitarian impact in affected areas, including the emerging Iran water crisis.
