President Nikos Christodoulides travels to Barcelona on Thursday to attend the inauguration of the Sagrada Familia, following an invitation from the Spanish Government.
According to a written statement by Presidential Press Office Director Victor Papadopoulos, the President will participate in the ceremony in his capacity as the leader of the EU member state currently holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
World leaders to attend ceremony
The inauguration is expected to bring together heads of state, government leaders and other high-ranking officials from across Europe and beyond.
The ceremonial service at the Sagrada Familia will be led by Pope Leo XIV, who will also deliver the official blessing of the basilica’s new tower.
The inauguration coincides with the 100th anniversary of the death of renowned architect Antoni Gaudí, the visionary behind one of the world’s most recognisable religious landmarks.
Visit to Picasso exhibition
On Friday, President Christodoulides will attend the exhibition Picasso and Cyprus: Encounters with the Ceramics of the Mediterranean at the Picasso Museum.
The exhibition forms part of the Cultural Programme of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Following the visit, the President is scheduled to return to Cyprus.
