A fire at Kalo Chorio in the Larnaca district broke out on Monday morning after a shell from a military exercise at the local firing range ignited dry grass and wild vegetation.
According to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, the blaze started near the Kalo Chorio firing range, in the Panagia Stazousa area between the Pyrga and Klavdia communities.
“The Fire Service is supporting the firefighting operation with five fire engines from the Larnaca stations and the EMAK rescue unit,” Kettis said, adding that the blaze remains under the operational responsibility of the Forestry Department. “Aerial firefighting units are also assisting in the operation.”
Smoke from the fire at Kalo Chorio is visible from several areas of Larnaca.
Sources from the Defence Ministry confirmed that the fire was caused by a shell during a training drill. The exercise is part of the Iris military training series taking place this week.
A nearby farm was briefly at risk, but no damage or injuries have been reported.
