The Cyprus Fire Service has activated an emergency personnel call-up for all fire stations in Limassol District as extreme weather conditions continue to increase the risk of wildfires across the region.
The measure was implemented at 8:16am on Friday, 24 July 2026, as part of the Fire Service’s emergency preparedness and response plan, following instructions from Chief Fire Officer Nikos Longinos.
Recall follows heightened wildfire risk
The decision was taken in response to the particularly dangerous conditions currently affecting Cyprus, with environmental factors significantly increasing the likelihood of fires breaking out and spreading rapidly.
The Fire Service said the call-up forms part of its preventive measures to ensure operational readiness during the ongoing period of elevated fire danger.
Senior officers oversee operation
Chief Fire Officer Longinos was at the Fire Service Headquarters’ Operations Centre overseeing the personnel call-up alongside Director of Administration and Training Andreas Christofi and the head of the Fire Service’s Unified Operations Coordination Centre, Sotiris Antoniou.
Meanwhile, Director of Operations Christoforos Stylianou was stationed in Limassol to monitor the mobilisation process locally.
Readiness assessment
The Fire Service said the primary objective was to assess operational readiness and ensure staff could report smoothly, efficiently and without disruption.
The exercise was designed to strengthen the service’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to any wildfire emergency during the current period of heightened risk.
