Fines issued for smuggling tobacco across the boarder

Date:

The Nicosia District Court has fined an 80-year-old man €8,000 after he was found repeatedly transporting large quantities of duty-free cigarettes from the occupied areas. Customs officers intercepted him at the Ayios Dhometios crossing carrying 67 cartons and additional packets of unstamped cigarettes lacking required health warnings and traceability codes.

In a separate case, a 58-year-old man was stopped in the Famagusta district with 57 cartons of cigarettes and 2.6kg of rolling tobacco. He received an out-of-court fine of €5,000 and forfeited the products for destruction.

A third individual, previously known to authorities for tobacco smuggling, was caught again at the Ayios Dhometios checkpoint with heated tobacco and rolling tobacco products. A later search of his home revealed further quantities. He was fined €3,500 through an out-of-court settlement, and all items were seized.
