Fidias Panayiotou launches new political party

Date:

Cypriot MEP Fidias Panayiotou has officially launched his new political party, naming it Direct Democracy, in a social media video- while wearing a red clown nose.

The announcement had been teased for days by the influencer-turned-politician, who kept his followers guessing about what form his political movement would take. On Thursday, he posted a short video revealing the party’s name and vision, stating that decisions should be made collectively through a mobile app.

Citizens to vote on candidates and decisions

According to Panayiotou, the party’s central concept is that decisions will be made directly by citizens, not by elected representatives acting on their behalf.

He explained that even the candidates who will appear on his party’s ballot in the upcoming parliamentary elections will be selected by the public.

“In today’s system, decisions are made by people we vote for once every five years… What we’re doing has never been done before, and even I don’t yet have a clear picture of how this mechanism will work,” he said in a follow-up video.

The party is expected to attract attention from younger voters and social media users who have followed Panayiotou’s rapid rise from YouTube fame to the European Parliament.
