Hahn steps down over new commitments

The European Commission announced on Monday that Johannes Hahn, the EU’s special envoy for Cyprus, has resigned due to pending commitments. The Commission expressed gratitude for his contributions to the Cyprus settlement process over the past year.

Commission statement and next steps

Maciej Berestecki, spokesperson for EU Cohesion matters, said: “Mr. Hahn has resigned from his role as the Commission’s special envoy for Cyprus due to other pending obligations. The Commission respects his decision and thanks him for his valuable contribution over the past year.”

The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, will decide on the next steps in due course. Hahn officially informed both the Commission and the UN of his resignation through a letter.

New role as Austrian central bank chief

Johannes Hahn will become the President of the General Council of the Austrian National Bank (OeNB), beginning a five-year term starting 1 January 2026. His appointment to this key financial role prompted his resignation from the Cyprus envoy position.

Impact on Cyprus peace efforts

Hahn’s resignation leaves the EU to appoint a successor as special envoy to continue supporting the ongoing Cyprus negotiations. His tenure over the past year was seen as instrumental in facilitating dialogue between parties on the island.
