Fidan: Cyprus blocks Europe’s strategic vision, despite its small size

Date:

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has reignited debate over Turkey-EU relations, making comments that appeared to reference Cyprus during a press conference in Vienna.

Speaking alongside Austria’s Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Fidan said a country with a population under one million can block a broader strategic vision for Europe, according to Anadolu Agency.

Fidan argued that Europe and Turkey together represent a population of around 500 million, which he said could achieve significant cooperation across multiple sectors.

However, he claimed that Turkey-EU relations suffer from internal EU obstacles, stating that political disagreements prevent progress despite existing potential.

He added that the issue reflects a broader European problem that, in his view, the EU must resolve internally.

Accession and political will debate

The Turkish foreign minister also renewed criticism of the EU accession process, arguing that Brussels lacks clear political will regarding Turkey’s membership prospects.

He said Turkey does not seek membership without conditions, but questioned what further expectations remain once criteria are met.

Fidan stated that Turkey already maintains strong ties with most European countries in defence, security, energy and trade, despite institutional challenges in Turkey-EU relations.

He highlighted that EU–Turkey trade volume approaches $250 billion and could reach $500 billion if the Customs Union is modernised.

Fidan also described Turkey as an emerging energy hub, suggesting it could play a stronger role in Europe’s energy security through expanded infrastructure and cooperation.

Wider geopolitical comments

Beyond Europe, Fidan addressed developments involving the United States and Iran, supporting diplomatic efforts and stressing the importance of maintaining a ceasefire.

He said resolving tensions within two weeks may not be realistic and warned that extensions may be needed. He also pointed to the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing mediation efforts involving Pakistan.
