Explosion and fire at a restaurant in Nicosia, suspected gas leak

Blaze erupts in city centre restaurant

A Nicosia restaurant fire broke out following an explosion at a premises located at the corner of Ezekia Papaioannou and Chytron streets in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to police, the fire started at around 3.00am, with initial indications pointing to a possible liquefied gas leak.

Extensive damage to interior and exterior

Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis said the blaze completely destroyed the cooking equipment and the restaurant’s dining area. Heat and smoke also caused damage to the building’s exterior walls, affecting both paintwork and external cladding.

Residents evacuated as precaution

As a precaution, Fire Service personnel, working with the Police, evacuated all residents of the apartment building. Authorities confirmed that no one was injured or placed in danger.

Firefighting operation and response

Fire crews used hose reels and breathing apparatus to bring the blaze under control. Three fire engines responded to the scene.

The exact cause of the Nicosia restaurant fire will be investigated by the competent authorities.

Fire Service activity in past 24 hours

The Cyprus Fire Service reported that it responded to a total of 19 incidents over the past 24 hours. Ten involved fires, while nine related to special assistance calls.
