EU reacts strongly after Russian drone crash in Romania

Date:

The Russian drone in Romania has triggered a strong reaction from the European Union after a reported drone crash into a residential building in Galați, injuring civilians and raising fresh concerns over the spillover of the war in Ukraine.

Romania confirmed that the drone struck a densely populated area in the city of Galați early on Friday morning, causing a fire and the evacuation of residents.

EU leaders describe incident as escalation

President of the European Council António Costa condemned the incident, calling it “reckless and irresponsible” and expressing full solidarity with Romania.

He said the drone strike in Romania represented a violation of Romanian airspace and international law, adding that the European Union remains united in increasing pressure on Russia through sanctions and strengthening defence capabilities along its eastern borders.

European Commission warns of ‘red line’

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen also strongly condemned the incident, describing it as another escalation in Russia’s war beyond Ukraine’s borders.

She said the strike on Romanian territory crossed a “red line”, stressing that the European Union stands in full solidarity with Romania and its citizens.

The incident, she added, reinforces the need for stronger security measures and continued support for eastern member states.

21st sanctions package under preparation

Von der Leyen also announced that the EU is preparing a 21st package of sanctions against Russia, as part of its ongoing strategy to increase pressure on Moscow.

She underlined that efforts to strengthen European security and deterrence will continue, particularly in border regions most exposed to spillover risks from the conflict.

Romanian authorities confirm airspace breach

According to Romania’s Ministry of Defence, the drone entered national airspace before crashing into the residential building in Galați, triggering a fire.

Emergency services reported that the explosive payload detonated upon impact. Around 70 residents were evacuated from the building as a precaution.

The incident has intensified concerns among NATO and EU members about the potential expansion of the conflict beyond Ukraine’s borders.
