Plans for a new dog shelter in Paphos are progressing, with local authorities working to complete procedures before a final decision is made on the location of the facility.
The issue is being treated as a priority due to the lack of a suitable existing space and the growing scale of the stray dog problem, Paphos Acting Mayor Angelos Onisiforou told Phileleftheros.
Local bodies coordinate efforts
Following a meeting held in May at Paphos Municipal Hall, chaired by Onisiforou, the involved local authorities have been working intensively to prepare the next steps for the creation of the shelter.
The meeting was attended by the four mayors of Paphos district, a representative of the Union of Communities of Paphos, Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare Antonia Theodosiou, as well as representatives of the animal welfare organisation Simba Animal Aid, Natasa Michaelidou and Alexandros Oriettas.
During the meeting, participants confirmed strong interest in creating a modern temporary shelter for stray dogs that would serve all municipalities and communities across Paphos district.
Government support for project
The Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare informed participants that the government intends to financially support the initiative with €250,000.
The planned dog shelter in Paphos would provide temporary accommodation for stray dogs and improve the management of the growing issue across the district.
Onisiforou reiterated his intention to proceed quickly with the necessary procedures, with the aim of having the shelter operational within 2027.
