The fine on Google has reached €890 million after the European Commission found that the technology company breached online competition rules through its search and app store services.
The EU’s executive body said Google violated the Digital Markets Act (DMA) by favouring its own services, including shopping and hotel offers, in search results over competing services.
Google was also found to have breached the DMA by restricting app developers from directing users towards cheaper offers available on external websites or alternative app stores.
Separate penalties issued for violations
The European Commission imposed a €460 million fine for the search-related breach and a further €430 million penalty linked to app store practices.
As part of the decision, the Commission ordered Google to ensure that third-party services appearing in search results are treated in a “fair and non-discriminatory manner”.
The company must also allow app developers to promote offers outside Google’s app store.
Google already testing changes
The Commission noted that Google has already begun testing changes to the way it displays search results involving its own services, including shopping and flights.
Officials said these changes represent “substantial progress towards compliance” with EU rules.
A senior EU official said consumers would be the direct beneficiaries of the decision, adding that search results in Europe would change as Google adapts its services.
Fine comes amid US tensions
The decision could increase tensions with US President Donald Trump, coming shortly before a deadline on temporary global tariffs affecting around 60 countries.
A senior EU official said there was no indication of how Trump would respond but stressed that the European Union has the “sovereign right” to regulate US technology companies operating within its jurisdiction.
The official also said the timing of the fine was unrelated to the tariff discussions.
