Sometimes, all it takes to plan a countryside escape is a craving for coffee and a slice of galaktoboureko. Add a family recipe, a traditional bakery or a village café with a story behind it, and you have the perfect excuse for a day trip.
This November, we explore five stops across Solea, Pitsilia, Agia Varvara and the Kalavasos–Zygi crossroads, where galaktoboureko takes centre stage alongside the people and small businesses that make each destination worth visiting.
1. Pame gia Brantsaki – Mrs Skevi’s galaktoboureko in Kakopetria
In Kakopetria, galaktoboureko has a name: Mrs Skevi, the mother of the family behind Pame gia Brantsaki, is the person who prepares it.
Rafaella Ioannou, a professional cook, returned to her family’s village and, together with her parents and two siblings, transformed the former AEK coffee shop opposite the police station into a breakfast and dessert destination.
The family’s involvement is reflected in the menu, which features homemade jams, handmade creations and sweets prepared on site.
If you are visiting for a traditional breakfast, make sure to leave room for Mrs Skevi’s galaktoboureko. Alternatively, pair a slice with coffee before taking a stroll through old Kakopetria.
Address: Griva Digeni Street, opposite the police station, Kakopetria.

2. Balkoni – The sweet story of Theopisti in Palaichori
Before the jars of nut butters, there were trays of traditional syrup-soaked sweets.
The story of Theopisti Fatta began in 2000, when she received a baklava recipe from Mr George in Palaichori. She started making baklava, galaktoboureko and kataifi, with growing demand eventually leading her to establish her own workshop.
Later, Stefanos and Eliza created Balkoni next to the Theopisti Nut Butters facilities. Overlooking the village and surrounding trees, the café combines contemporary creations with Theopisti’s traditional sweets, including galaktoboureko.
The stop is also an opportunity to discover a family story that began with traditional recipes and gradually developed into a workshop and village café.
Address: 5A Eleftherias Street, Palaichori, Nicosia district.
3. Galata Traditional Bakery – A family tradition dating back to 1953
Also known as Kyrillos Bakery, Galata Traditional Bakery has a long family history.
In 1953, Anna and Iakovos Kyrillou began making bread for holidaymakers. They later expanded their work to serve the needs of the local community, gradually growing the family business.
Galaktoboureko is among the traditional sweets available at the bakery, alongside bread and savoury products.
You can combine this stop with a visit to Kakopetria or drop by on your way back from Troodos to pick up something sweet for the Sunday family table.
Address: 5 Archbishop Kyprillos Street, Galata, Nicosia district.
4. Momento Bakery by Sotiris Ladas – Classic or rolled in Agia Varvara
At the entrance to Agia Varvara, Sotiris’ bakery offers something a little different: galaktoboureko in both its classic form and a rolled version, served in smaller bites.
Momento Bakery also has an adjoining café, making it an ideal stop for a coffee alongside your sweet treat.
Its other offerings include sourdough bread, tahinopita and traditional olive pies, giving visitors plenty of reasons to leave with more than the dessert they originally came for.
Address: 68 Grigori Afxentiou Street, Agia Varvara, Nicosia district.

5. O Fournos tou Kyprou – A sweet detour at the Kalavasos crossroads
If you are planning a trip towards Kalavasos and Zygi, consider adding O Fournos tou Kyprou to your route.
The family-run bakery opened in August 1999 and is located at the Kalavasos–Zygi crossroads.
Galaktoboureko is among its well-known offerings, alongside tahinopita and freshly made bread. The dessert was also featured in an April 2026 Check In Cyprus article showcasing some of the bakery’s creations.
It is a convenient stop for anyone combining a village outing or a seaside meal with a box of traditional sweets to take home.
Address: 25 Stavrodromiou Street, Kalavasos–Zygi crossroads, Larnaca district.
Before making a special trip for galaktoboureko, contact the business to check availability and opening hours.
Products and operating days may vary.
