EU: Costas Kadis as the new Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans?

Date:

We will soon find out if he gets the “green light” for the position of Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans – He will be called to answer questions from members of the Fisheries Committee and the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.

Cypriot candidate for Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, is set to appear today before the European Parliament’s Fisheries Committee (PECH) to participate in the hearing process, in line with the European Union’s protocol for assessing commissioner candidates.

The hearing will take place at 14:30 (local time, 15:30 Cyprus time) and is expected to last three hours, with the participation of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI). It is noted that the hearings are held between 4 and 7 November, with the hearings for the six executive vice presidents scheduled for 12 November.

Who is Who

Costas Kadis, to whom Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has assigned the Fisheries and Oceans portfolio, was born in Nicosia in 1967.

He graduated from Pancyprian Gymnasium in 1985 and subsequently served in the National Guard until 1987.

He studied in the Department of Biology at the University of Athens, where he obtained his degree in 1991 and his PhD with honours in 1995.

Mr. Kadis’s studies also include attending specialised postgraduate programmes in Mediterranean Landscape Ecology at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, Science Education at the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Athens, and Public-Funded Research Management at Cornell University in the United States.

Surprised by the Offer to Become Commissioner

It is worth mentioning that in statements made in September, Mr. Kadis mentioned he was surprised by the proposal to become Commissioner, as he had never discussed this matter with President Christodoulides. “I was on holiday when he told me he wanted me to take up this position. I asked for some time to think about it because, as you can understand, accepting this proposal means a lot,” he stated on the SIGMA programme Protoselido.
