Doctors report repeated GESY outages according to survey

Date:

Doctors across Cyprus are working overtime, watching appointments pile up and losing valuable clinical time because the GESY computer system keeps failing, an island-wide survey has found.

The Cyprus Medical Association polled 728 doctors from all specialties between 30 September and 30 November 2025.

Frequent outages disrupt patient care

Some 91% of respondents said they had experienced GESY outages or complete system unavailability, with disruptions lasting between one and four hours and occurring weekly or even daily.

These outages have major consequences. Around 65% of doctors reported appointment delays, patient backlogs, and an inability to provide timely care, while 80% said they regularly worked outside normal hours to catch up.

More than half, 54%, said the delays seriously affected their work. In addition to downtime, 82% reported technical problems including disconnections, errors, and freezing, while 62% said the system ran slowly on a regular basis.

System design criticised

Doctors also criticised the system’s design. Some 86% described its medical protocols as unclear and bureaucratic, saying they lost valuable clinical time as a result.

Despite being the core tool of the GESY, only 46% of doctors rated the system positively for ease of use, and just 61% said it contributed to service quality to some extent.

Call for urgent action

The Cyprus Medical Association said the survey shows the problems are systemic, not isolated, and warned that quality, safe healthcare cannot exist when the system that processes all medical activity malfunctions so frequently.

It urged the authorities to implement an immediate and permanent solution to restore efficiency and safeguard patient care.
