Cyprus’ travel trends favour Europe amid rising costs

Date:

Rising living costs and geopolitical tensions are shaping travel trends, with most holidaymakers continuing to favour Greece and central Europe while cutting back on long-haul trips.

Speaking on Sigma’s Mesimeri kai Kati, Honorary President of the Association of Cyprus Travel Agents Akis Kelepesis said travel habits remain largely unchanged, although higher costs and developments in the Middle East are prompting people to plan their holidays more carefully.

Europe remains the top choice

Kelepesis said Greece continues to be the most popular destination for Cypriots, while Italy, France, Germany and Spain remain the leading choices for European city breaks and holidays. Italy and France continue to attract the strongest demand.

He noted that, despite changing economic conditions, Cyprus’ travel trends still point towards nearby destinations that offer greater value for money.

Higher costs hit long-haul travel

According to Kelepesis, inflation is encouraging travellers to look for more affordable options.

“Most people will travel to Greece and central Europe, trying to keep costs as low as possible because the rising cost of living is also affecting holidays,” he said.

He added that recent developments in the Middle East have mainly affected long-haul travel, as many international flights pass through Gulf countries, reducing the range of available routes.

Cruises continue to grow

Cruises have become increasingly popular in recent years, although they still account for a relatively small share of travel compared with air holidays.

Most Cypriots begin Eastern Mediterranean cruises from Piraeus, Western Mediterranean itineraries from Rome and Baltic cruises from Copenhagen.

Travellers favour flexibility over all-inclusive

Kelepesis said all-inclusive holidays are not the preferred option for most Cypriot travellers, particularly when visiting Greece.

Instead, many prefer to leave their hotels to explore local tavernas and restaurants. For European trips, breakfast-only accommodation remains the most popular choice, giving travellers greater flexibility to explore their destination.

Interest is also growing in holidays centred around activities such as hiking, sporting events, concerts and other experiences.

Package holiday prices up by 3% to 5%

Kelepesis estimated that the cost of package holidays has increased by between 3% and 5% compared with last year.

He attributed the increase mainly to higher airfares following the outbreak of the Middle East crisis, which pushed up airline fuel costs. These factors continue to influence Cyprus’ travel trends ahead of the peak holiday season.
