Cyprus reports Turkish violations to UN Security Council

Date:

305 air and 33 naval breaches recorded

The Republic of Cyprus has submitted a new letter to the UN Secretary-General, circulated as Security Council document S/2026/240, denouncing a series of violations by Turkish air and naval forces over the two-month period of January–February 2026. These include breaches of national airspace, international aviation regulations within the Nicosia FIR, and Cypriot territorial waters.

Airspace violations detailed

According to the letter from Cyprus’ Permanent Representative to the UN, the violations represent “further manifestations of Turkey’s ongoing unlawful actions against the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of the Republic of Cyprus.” The report documents a total of 305 air violations, including 81 by Turkish UAVs and 44 by armed fighter jets, as well as unauthorised military exercises supported by four illegitimate NOTAMs.

The annexes list aircraft entering the Nicosia FIR without permission or communication, including BAYRAKTAR TB-2, ANKA, AKINCI, AKSUNGUR UAVs, F-16 and RF-4 fighters, ATR-72, CN-235, A-400 transport planes, and AS-532 and EC-135 helicopters.

Naval incursions highlighted

Cyprus also reports repeated territorial waters violations by Turkish warships and auxiliary vessels, including KARATAS, KILIÇ, YILDIZ, GİRESUN, TUFAN, KALKAN, and KDZ EREGLI. The letter notes that these ships illegally entered the closed ports of Famagusta and Kyrenia, conducting operations in support of occupation forces.

Impact on security and peace efforts

Cyprus links these violations to near-daily breaches of the military status quo by Turkish occupation forces and the strengthening of military infrastructure in the occupied areas. The letter stresses that these actions undermine the sense of security of all Cypriots and obstruct conditions necessary for resuming comprehensive settlement talks.

Commitment to negotiations

The Republic reaffirmed its full support for the UN Secretary-General and his Special Envoy’s efforts to restart talks, aiming for “a lasting, comprehensive and fair solution based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality,” as outlined in relevant Security Council resolutions.
