Cyprus received mobile desalination units from the United Arab Emirates, on Saturday, to tackle the severe drought and water scarcity issues.
The units arrived on time, according to the planning, the Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Ministry said, adding that on Monday they will be transferred to the sites where they will be installed.
As it is noted, according to the planning to date, the units will be installed in Limassol and Paphos. In particular desalination units with a total capacity of 13,650 cubic meters will be placed in Limassol and 1,350 cubic meters in Paphos.
In Paphos, in addition to the unit from the UAE, an additional desalination unit with a capacity of 2,000 cubic meters will also be installed.
The Ministry said that the Water Development Department has been intensively implementing the preliminary work for the placement and interconnection of the units from the UAE, so that they can provide water by the end of June.
In parallel with the mobile units from the UAE, the Water Development Department is gearing up its planning for the management of the water scarcity problem with the installation of additional mobile desalination units within 2025 as well as for the permanent solution of the problem.
In Limassol, the installation of mobile units in Garylli river and the Port is also progressing, while in Paphos, the works for the units in Kissonerga and Kouklia are also in progress, with a total capacity of 25,000 cubic meters, the press release noted.
The Ministry once again thanked the United Arab Emirates, noting that the granting of the units from the UAE is yet another tangible result of Cyprus’ active foreign policy, which strengthens bilateral cooperation with strategic partners and promotes the Republic’s international role.
More units were delivered at Larnaca port on Sunday. Cyprus FM Constantinos Kombos spoke on the phone with UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashimy and expressed sincere thanks for the timely and generous provision of desalination units.
