Eurostat records steady demographic growth

The population of Cyprus reached 982,966 residents on 1 January 2025, up from 966,365 in 2024, according to new data published by Eurostat as part of its annual demographic review of the European Union.

Across the EU, the population stood at 451 million in 2025, marking an increase of around one million compared with the previous year, highlighting continued but modest growth across the bloc.

Cyprus among smaller EU states

The population of Cyprus remains among the smallest in the European Union, accounting for around 0.2% of the bloc’s total population.

Germany (84 million), France (69 million), Italy (59 million), Spain (49 million) and Poland (36 million) remain the largest member states, together representing 66% of the EU population.

Eurostat data shows the EU population has increased from 435 million in 2005 to 451 million in 2025, a rise of around 4% over two decades. During this period, 19 member states recorded population growth while 8 saw declines.

Cyprus was among the countries with the strongest relative growth, with its population rising by approximately 34% between 2005 and 2025.

Ageing population across the EU

The data also confirms ongoing population ageing across Europe. The share of people aged 65 and over increased from 17% in 2005 to 22% in 2025, while 6% of the EU population is aged 80 and above.

The median age in the EU rose to 44.9 years in 2025, compared with 39.6 in 2005, confirming a long-term demographic shift. In Cyprus, the median age stands at 41, below the EU average.

Children and teenagers under 15 account for 15.2% of the population of Cyprus, compared with 14% across the EU.

Migration trends remain significant

In 2024, around six million people migrated into the European Union, with 74% arriving from non-EU countries and 26% from other member states.

In Cyprus, 40,471 people immigrated in 2024, slightly down from 40,761 in 2023. Meanwhile, 26,883 people emigrated from Cyprus in 2024, compared with 26,979 the previous year.

Cyprus records positive natural population change

Eurostat notes that since 2012, deaths have exceeded births across the EU. In 2024, the crude rate of natural population change stood at -2.8%.

Cyprus, however, recorded a positive natural change rate of 3.1%, placing it among a small group of EU countries with growth driven by births rather than deaths, alongside Ireland and Luxembourg.

Mobility within the EU

EU-wide, around 45 million people (10%) live in a member state other than their country of citizenship, including 14 million EU citizens residing in another EU country.
